Fortnite aim training using a creative map

How to Get Better Aim in Fortnite and Hit More Shots

In Guides by Kr4m5 Comments

Fortnite is a shooter game.

So your ability to have precise aim matters a lot.

When your aim is better than your opponents, your chances of winning increase dramatically.

Of course, everyone wants to have aim like Tfue.

But the real question is how do you get better aim?

In this post, you’ll find actionable tips to help you improve your aim in Fortnite so you can hit more shots and win more games.

Use aim trainers

Merely playing Fortnite isn’t an effective way to improve your aim.

Why?

Because when you play Fortnite you spend a lot of your time running around and looting. And not a lot of time actually fighting with enemies and practicing your aim.

This is known as “downtime”.

Aim trainers are the solution to the problem of downtime. As for specific aim trainers, I recommend Kovaak’s FPS Aim Trainer.

Kovaak’s is played by a bunch of the best Fortnite players and it’s how they train their aim and get so good.

The reason Kovaak’s is excellent is that there are literally thousands of scenarios you can play to train your aim in different ways. So if you have a particular problem with your aim you can isolate it and train it.

For example, if you don’t have very good vertical tracking aim you can play vertical tracking scenarios to improve it, or if you want to improve your shotgun aim you can play scenarios that train your wide-angle flicks, and so on.

When I started playing Kovaak’s, I noticed a measurable improvement in my aim and mouse control in just a few short weeks of consistent practice.

Of course, you’re only going to experience positive results if you actually follow a decent routine.

You see, as there are so many scenarios it’s easy to get overwhelmed and play useless scenarios in an unstructured and inconsistent manner.

Here’s my complete guide to Kovaak’s with example routines. When you follow this exactly, you will improve your aim.

But if you don’t want to play Kovaak’s for whatever reason, you have other ways to train your aim.

You see, there are players that are creating aim courses using the Creative mode in Fortnite that you can use to improve your aim.

Using Fortnite Creative aim maps have some advantages over playing an aim trainer like Kovaak’s.

For example, you’ll use the same weapons that are actually in the game so you can get familiar with those, and you’ll use the same third-person perspective to better train your intuition.

These are the best Fortnite creative maps for practicing and improving your aim.

Play aim duels

Aim duels are different to aim trainers.

With an aim trainer, you’re playing a specific scenario against bot targets.

But in an aim duel, you’re playing against an actual opponent in Fortnite Creative.

Here is the code for Kroader’s aim duel map: 8082-3111-1094

Aim duels are great for getting better aim because they allow you to train your aim in a useful way against a real player. And you’ll be using the same weapons in Fortnite and the movements are the same, too.

In an aim duel, you both have a high amount of hitpoints. So each duel can go on for an extended amount of time, enabling you to get a lot of aim practice and work on your consistency.

But when you play aim duels, you’re not just training your aim.

You see, you’ll be training your movement and dodging abilities as well. These are important skills to develop so playing aim duels allows you to have a very efficient and effective practice session.

Of course, you’ll need another player to aim duel against.

And if you don’t have anyone to play with, don’t worry.

The Fortnite community is massive and it’s easy to find someone to play with. For example, you can use the looking for group section of Fortnite Tracker or join a Discord server like the FNPL.

I recommend you look to play aim duels against someone that is slightly better than you. Because when you play against someone that’s better than you, you’re going to be pushed to compete at their level so you can get better.

Look, you don’t want to play against someone that you can easily beat every time because that’s not going to make you a better player.

And you don’t want to play against someone that’s so much better than you that you lose every time. Because this could lead to you giving up and not wanting to play, which is not good.

So look for someone that can beat you as much as you can tolerate, whatever that may be for you.

Lower your sensitivity

There’s a good chance that you’re using a sensitivity in Fortnite that’s too high.

When your sensitivity is too high you can’t be as precise with your aim.

As a general recommendation, I don’t recommend using a sensitivity greater than 150 eDPI in Fortnite.

Your eDPI is your true Fortnite sensitivity and it’s a function of your mouse DPI and in-game sensitivity. You can use my online calculator to find your eDPI in Fortnite.

My video about how to calculate your Fortnite eDPI has had thousands of views and hundreds of comments from people letting me know their eDPI. I went through every comment and wrote down the eDPI of each player so I could analyze it.

I found that the average eDPI of people that commented on my video was 310.

This is more than 4x higher than the average eDPI of the best Fortnite players.

Listen, you can’t have precise aim when you use a very high sensitivity. Or, at least, it’s very difficult to have precise aim.

If you want to get better aim in Fortnite, you should use the lowest sensitivity possible. Because when you use a low sensitivity there is more surface area for you to move your mouse, so you can be more precise.

Take a look at this graph that shows the sensitivity of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) players based on rank.

CSGO sensitivity index by players rank showing lower sensitivity is used by better players

CSGO is a first-person shooter game that’s highly aim dependent and the best players are known for their insane aim.

You can see in that above graph that there is a direct correlation between using a low sensitivity and the rank of players. In other words, higher rank players use a lower sensitivity.

So what sensitivity should you use in Fortnite?

In general, I recommend using an eDPI between about 40 and 90 as that’s going to work well for most people.

You can go higher, but I don’t recommend going any higher than 150 eDPI.

Of course, sensitivity in Fortnite is a detailed subject and there are more things to consider like your targeting and scope sensitivity.

Learn correct crosshair placement

When you play Fortnite, you’re going to be looking around to loot items on the ground.

As a result, your crosshairs can be looking too far down and not positioned in the correct spot. This is a common mistake that Fortnite players make all the time.

And what do you think happens when you get into a fight and your crosshairs are positioned too far down?

Clearly, you’re at a disadvantage because your crosshairs aren’t in the best position.

Think about it. The further your crosshairs are away from your enemy, the further you have to move your crosshairs to get them to the right place.

And the further you have to move your crosshairs, the longer it’s going to take you to position your crosshairs on your enemy. During this time your enemy may have already killed you.

It’s also going to be more difficult to get your aim locked onto your enemy because your crosshairs have to travel further, so there is more room for error.

And if your crosshairs aren’t in the right position, you may not even see your enemy because you’re not looking in the right spot.

Now, what would it mean if your crosshairs were always in the right position?

Your aim will be better and you’ll hit more shots.

If you’ve ever watched the best Counter-Strike players, you’ll see they have an excellent crosshair position. They keep their crosshairs at head level, even when they’re walking around corners. So when they encounter an enemy it’s a lot easier for them to position their aim for a 1 tap kill.

It’s the same with the best Fortnite players. Their crosshair will always be in the correct position.

When you pay more attention to your crosshair position and make sure they’re in the optimal position, your aim will improve.

Use the right equipment

Your mouse is one of the most important pieces of gaming equipment that you’ll own.

And you’ll need to get the right mouse that fits your hand if you want to aim to your full potential.

If you’re using an old mouse with an out of date sensor, then you’re not going to be able to track enemies correctly. Or if the mouse polling rate is too low then your mouse won’t feel responsive.

The problem is that there are literally hundreds of gaming mice to choose from. They’re all different shapes and sizes, so it can get pretty confusing.

When I was looking for a mouse to play Fortnite with, I just chose the one that Ninja was using at the time because he was arguably the best player.

That mouse was the Logitech G502. I thought if I got the exact same mouse as Ninja then I could play like him.

I was wrong.

Not because the Logitech G502 is a bad mouse. But because this mouse wasn’t the right size for me.

You see, the Logitech G502 is quite a big and heavy mouse. But I have fairly small hands so I need to use a smaller mouse.

And when I switched to using a smaller mouse that was right for my hand size my aim instantly improved.

I think that the most important thing to consider when buying a mouse is that it is the right size for your hand. Even if you get the best mouse, but it isn’t the right size, you won’t be able to aim to your full potential.

As a rough guide, you want the length of your mouse to be about 66% of the length of your hand. So if the length of your hand is 19 cm then you’ll want the length of your mouse to be about 12.54 cm.

Of course, there are more factors to consider than just size when choosing a mouse.

You want a mouse with a good shape for the best aiming potential, with a top sensor, low weight, and side buttons for your keybinds.

But what mouse should you get?

Here are the best gaming mice that you can get for Fortnite.

Get more FPS and a high refresh monitor

High FPS in tandem with a high refresh monitor makes you better at Fortnite.

Why?

Because with more FPS and a high refresh rate monitor you get more information. Information such as speed and trajectory, which can better enable you to predict the location of a target so you can hit your shots.

In a study by Nvidia, using anonymized GeForce Experience Highlights on K/D events for Fortnite, they showed that at 180 FPS, the K/D ratio of a player is almost double that of a player at 60 FPS.

The correlation between K/D ratio and FPS in Fortnite and PUBG

But what if better players just happen to use better hardware?

Well, this was answered in another study that took into account player skill by looking into hours played.

K/D ratio increase in PUBG and Fortnite based on hours played and graphics card model

This shows that having a better graphics card (and thus more FPS) helps to improve a player’s performance at all levels and times played.

In fact, the gap in the relative improvement of K/D ratio actually increases over time. So if you have more hours played, you could actually benefit even more from upgrading your hardware and getting more FPS.

Of course, having a powerful graphics card pumping out extra frames doesn’t mean much if you don’t have a monitor with a high refresh rate because you can’t actually see the frames.

This chart shows the relation between graphics cards and display rates.

Fortnite Battle Royale and PUBG increase in KD based on display rate and GPU

You can see there is a huge improvement in K/D when playing at 144 Hz. There’s a noticeable improvement at 240 Hz when the graphics cards are powerful enough to get those extra frames, as well.

How does this all translate to improved aim in the real world?

In this video from Linus Tech Tips, 5 players with varying skill levels were put through a series of tests designed to test a player’s aim in different ways.

The interesting thing was that each test was performed on 3 different rigs and the scores were taken to see if high FPS/Hz made a difference.

  • System 1: 60 FPS/Hz
  • System 2: 144 FPS/Hz
  • System 3: 240 FPS/Hz

In each test, players were able to improve their scores when playing on the higher FPS/Hz system.

One of the tests, the double doors test, had particularly dramatic results. The double doors test is a practical assessment of reaction time where you had to click on an enemy jumping through the double doors on dust 2.

The players were measured on the average number of times they could hit the bot that jumped through the doors. Take a look at the results from this test below.

You can see that some players made more than a 1000% improvement when playing on the high FPS/HZ system.

So if you want to get better at Fortnite and improve your aim then one of the best things you can do is upgrade your set up.

Obviously, your graphics card and CPU matters a lot for FPS, so you should upgrade those first if you can.

But you can make tweaks to your Fortnite settings and system settings to get more FPS without spending a penny.

Try playing a different game

CSGO gameplay

In general, the best way to get good at something is to do that thing a lot.

In other words, the best way to get good at Fortnite is to play a lot of Fortnite.

But the problem with Fortnite is that a lot of your playtime isn’t spent in combat.

Let me explain.

When you play Fortnite, you spend most of your time looting items, farming for material or running away from the storm. So, you spend little time actually fighting enemies and training your aim.

Yes, you could (and should) play Kovaak’s FPS Aim Trainer or Creative courses designed to improve your aim more efficiently.

Or you could play Team Rumble mode in Fortnite. Because in Team Rumble you encounter more enemies and it’s easy to get 20+ kills in a game.

However, the skill level of players in Team Rumble is a lot lower and the flow of the game is a lot different. I think Team Rumble is great for warming up or for completing the Fortnite Battle Pass challenges because you respawn, too.

But how about you try a different game entirely?

Hear me out.

I’ve played a bunch of games at a competitive level. And it’s taken me many months (sometimes years) to get a decent level.

And whenever I’ve hit a plateau and feel like I’m not improving I take a break and play something different. Then, when I return, I’ve somehow gotten better.

How could that be?

Here’s my theory: When you stop playing Fortnite you give yourself a chance to learn and develop. And when you return you begin to see things differently because you don’t have the same biases as before.

Therefore, you identify new ways to improve.

Anyway, here are 2 games I suggest you try:

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO)
  • Overwatch

Both are amazing first-person shooters. You get to fight players a lot of the time so your aim can improve fast.

Of course, you want to use the same sensitivity for these games as you do for Fortnite. You can use an online sensitivity calculator to convert your sensitivity from different games.

Don’t think about it

When your favorite pro player is playing Fortnite do you think they are thinking: “Ok the enemy has jumped and now I’ve got to move my elbow 13 degrees to the right and now I’ve got to build because this is happening and so on”

No. The truth is that pro players aren’t really thinking when they are playing.

Listen. They’ve practiced so much that they’ve managed to automate the processes.

Think about it. When you are walking around you aren’t thinking “Now I place my left leg forward and bend my knee this precise amount and so on”.

You just do it because you’ve trained your body what to do. It’s exactly the same with pro gamers and athletes, too.

Have you heard of “the zone”?

It’s the headspace that pro athletes tap in to.

It’s where time seems to slow down and everything flows naturally and it’s heavenly and it doesn’t feel like you’re playing but you are and then you’ve done things you could never do normally.

But you need to practice the mechanical things first. Practice them so much that they become second nature like walking.

Conclusion

As you know, it’s beneficial to have good aim in Fortnite.

Because, ultimately, Fortnite is a shooter game.

I hope you have learned some new ways to train your aim and you now know how to create an efficient practice schedule.
